Archive department



The purpose of the archival department (Article 9 of Law 1946/1991 “General State Archives and other provisions”) is:
α) The supervision, preservation, collection, conservation, recording, micro-photography, classification and indexing of the country’s archival material and the making available for study of all public and private archives, documents and manuscripts, which refer to the history and cultural heritage of the Greek nation and to everything related to the administrative, economic and social life of the Greek State.
b) The identification and inventory of public archives of historical interest, their selection and introduction to the General State Archives and preparation for their availability to researchers.
c) Cooperation with the authorities of the Church, ecclesiastical and monastic institutions and other religious bodies for the preservation of archival material.
d) Cooperation with the holders of private archives of historical interest.
e) supervising the special archives referred to in Article 39.
f) The publication of publications (periodicals and self-published), which serve the knowledge of the historical sources of the country.
g) Participation in research projects in cooperation with other scientific institutions in the country or abroad.
h) The enrichment by purchase or acceptance of donations of archival material from their holders and copies of archival material held in foreign countries or organisations.
