HISTORY OF THE HOUSING ROUTE

The Epirus Archive (1938) was housed in the building of the Zosimaia Public Central Library of Ioannina. This was followed by the transfer of the service and its responsibilities to the municipal building “Ismini Tzavella Endowment”, 31 Pavlou Mela Street, in 1991.

In 1989, Melina Mercouri, Minister of Culture, granted the historic building from the Ministry of Culture to the Ministry of Education for the housing and operation of the G.A.K. – Archives of the Prefecture of Ioannina (Ministerial Decision, Ministry of Education B1/F33/8707178/27-2-1989). After the delivery of the study by the K.A.S. (F. 472/1518/ST3/2093, 30-10-2001), the building was included in the European programme of the Ministry of Culture “Restoration and conversion of the Sufari Serai building into a place of accommodation and operation of the G.A.K. – Archives of Ioannina Prefecture” (decision no. 2600/15-7-2002 of the General Secretary of the Region of Epirus, Pavlos Papadopoulos). After the completion of the restoration works, the building was inaugurated by the President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias and the Minister of Education Marietta Giannakou-Koutsikou on 19 February 2005.

The ground floor is home to the “Historical Archive – Museum of Epirus” (I.A.M.H.) and the archival material (archives). The administrative organization and support is reflected in the Administration, Archivists, Reading Room, Library and Multipurpose Room on the upper floor.
